UMass Dartmouth graduate student Elizabeth Ells of Centerville has been awarded a scholarship for her research from the Barnstable Association for Recreational Shellfishing (BARS).

Ells, who studies Estuarine and Ocean Sciences at the School for Marine Science and Technology, was awarded the scholarship for her work on Thorpe sorting using MATLAB. Thorpe sorting involves looking at density profiles of ocean water and making a scale of the length of the overturns by turning a profile with inversions into one without and measuring the displacement.
Ells earned her undergraduate B.S. degree in Civil Engineering with a minor in Construction Management from Norwich University. The first-year grad student is the daughter of Town Manager Mark and Christina Ells.
BARS began funding an endowment at the university for promising ocean researchers in January 2017.
